Lessons from Nature

Three years ago, I transplanted five trees and only one of the five trees managed to survive. And, it is only recently that this survivor tree has started to show the same vigor as before!

Transplanting a tree is tedious and often unsuccessful.

There are many factors that affect transplanting the tree such as the condition of the soil, the position of the tree, the amount of sunlight/ shade, the timing/ season of transplanting and so forth. (I only learnt this afterwards, *darn*.)

In our own lives, we often find ourselves longing for greener pastures - to be transplanted elsewhere.

Discontent. With our lot. With our 'plot of land'.

And sure, our environment can be tough. But our vigor and strength does not come from our environment or situation or location or materialistic 'stuff' (or even our gym routines).  Vigor, meaning our identity, security, energy, purpose. Our vigor is found in the presence of God.

Psa 92:12-14  The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow strong like a cedar in Lebanon. They are (trans)planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green,

"Planted in the house of the Lord, they flourish in the courts of our God" - Living, anchored, rooted in His presence.

"Transplanted" - when we get to know Jesus, He takes us out of darkness and places us in His presence where there is only an abundance of light and love. In Him, there is no darkness. He is the only person that can successfully transplant your soul and heart.

  • Psalm 104:16-17 The trees of the Lord are well cared for - the cedars of Lebanon that He planted. There the birds make their nests.

"Flourish" - To thrive, be healthy, to be bold and extravagant - our lives testifies loudly of God's goodness!

"They are ever full" - always, regardless of circumstances. Constant. Continuing.

"Full of sap and green" - they remain vital and vigorous; victorious! Full of the Holy Spirit to pour out onto others, to be generous. Plentiful.

And as I get older, I do love the part that even in old age, they remain fresh and vital! Even in old age, we can be fresh and relevant and full of life - bearing testimony to God's faithfulness and to living a life of fullness in Him.
