The Zim Story

Wessie & Somien from King's City Church. Zimbabwe

Roughly 6 years ago, a family, called by God, moved to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to start a church. Their mission was to fulfill God's commission of us, as believers, going into all nations and making disciples of men and women. As heroic as this may sound, it was far from easy- leaving family and friends, uprooting kids, schooling... stability.

But in obedience, they went and have since received much more in return!

Wessie & Somien's story of going is not unique, but its the details, the how, when and where that is utterly their own. No-one else can replicate it in the least.

And their story- their obedience to be part of God's story- has inspired me!

I have been encouraged, once again, that all the things we think our kids need are not really necessary. Although Somien's kids missed out on a normal schooling system, meaning plenty of opportunities for sport and culture and academics and friendships, her sons are impressive young men that love God and love people.

And that is what I want too.

My greatest heart's desire is for my kids to love God with all their heart, mind and soul.

Not to be popular. Not to be self-sufficient. Not to make their own names great, but to glorify God's name.

And the only way my kids will be violent for God's Kingdom is if I am violent for it. If I put God first. If I live it. If I obey God regardless of my own ideas and plans.

Such revelation is not only accidentally "caught" by our kids, but it is also "taught".

And sometimes, it means I need to train myself firstly and in so doing, I am training my kids too.

1Ti 4:10-12  For to this end (-goal of godliness) we toil and strive (referring to training), because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Saviour of all people... Command and teach these things. Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

ps. Have a look at a song performed by their church's band. Their son, Janco, is a part of the band and also leads the youth at their church: a radical, Jesus- amped group of young men and women. youtube video- KING'S CITY CHURCH
