And the Tooth fairy takes a Taxi

She stood on the corner of melville and boon, a big momma with wrinkles around her tired eyes. Squinting against the sun as she waits for the local taxi to take her back to the township- a place littered with box like houses made from corrugated iron.

She seemed hot and bothered. Tired. Overworked and late for starting supper back home where she keeps her handicapped daughter, the boyfriend, and her retired husband alive. The breadwinner of the family, but also the cook and cleaner.

She knows about sorrow, having lost her son – he was only twenty something. She takes care of the extended family and organizes the funerals for her brothers’ daughters. Both passed away in the same week.

She knows about pain for her feet are swollen, her body aches and every so often she forgets to take her medication for depression and end up having splitting headaches.

You might have the answers for all her troubles and trials. Perhaps very credible indeed.

But this is not what this story is about. No, its about a poor woman, who only had two coins to live from and she gave it all, without murmuring and without grumbling.

And when she went to sleep that night, she became the tooth fairy –her smile lights up her face like a christmas tree. Even with the gaps in her teeth, she is so pretty. And she goes about building a beautiful castle with that which others have forgotten…

Humility, long suffering, kindness… things people are keen to get rid of for bigger and better- greed, gossip and selfishness. And she builds herself the most beautiful castle.

I take one long last look before the traffic light turns green, she smiles at me and I feel as if I’ve been given some kind of gift. A gift from the prettiest toothless tooth fairy.
