I’ve seen in my kids how the words of the songs that we sing about Jesus get stuck in their little minds. What we sing makes them think about who God is and also creates awareness in their minds about His worth. We went to the Drakensberg earlier this year and Callen (my 3-year old boy) said to me “mommy; look at the mountains, did you know Jesus can move them?” We sing a song about this (‘Saviour, He can move the mountains’) and it was obvious that he’s been thinking about the fact the Someone can move mountains! We also sing ‘Happy Day, you washed my sin away’. Callen asked me the other day what ‘sin’ means because of this song. This was a great opportunity to share the gospel with him. What we celebrate is what our children see is important to us. Whatever we do, whether being a friend to someone, enjoying moments with the kids, even as we go to church, when it’s convenient or not, our children understand that this is important to us. (I suppose the same can be said of the things we mourn about…)
